** We're having a break in the schedule while Sam, our in-house teacher, deals with having another child (the crazy fool!). Planing a piece of wood properly is a fundamental first step to the success of any solid wood project. Do this well, and everything else feels just that little bit easier. It is also one of the foundational competencies of an aspiring woodsperson. Planing also reveals the timber’s character for the first time. Even for experienced woodworkers, there is nothing quite as satisfying as starting off with a dusty rough bumpy bit of timber and working with it so the depth of colour and contours of the grain emerge. This course has been designed to share the experience with you.
Learn how to read a rough-sawn piece of timber and how best to use it. Rough-cut pieces on the bandsaw, learn the technique of planing faces and edges, thickness them, join them, design your boards, add detail, sand and finish, chat, drink tea and make merry.
We ask participants to arrive at 9am for a 9.15 start. We aim to finish by 5.30pm but the day may be longer or shorter depending on how the work progresses.
In our beautiful double-height, purpose-built workshop in Dartington Forest. Map and parking details will be sent to you once you’ve booked. Wood Lab has parking, and is only a 5 min taxi or 30 min walk from Totnes Railway station.
The course fee covers tuition, tools, materials, the use of PPE in various sizes (personal protective equipment) and teas, coffee and dairy-free milk.
What to bring, what to wear, where to park, etc. will all be given to you once you've booked.
We look forward to welcoming you to Woodlab!
